G is in having a few things done on it, and while it has been in the garage has come back to me with the following;

Pilot Bush is leaking as is the park cable. I understand that the pilot bush is easy to replace, however the park break, they are saying its a complete gear box strip (20 hrs work). :x

Any advice / pointers? :(

Also if I go ahead with this, while the gearbox is out - what else should I take advantage and get done/get them to check?

Cheers

Re: Park Cable Advice please

Hi the seal is where the cable enters the gearbox ..as you say an easy fix..the park brake mechanism is inside the gearbox and the Park pawl can shear if you engage Park on the move. the probable scenario if your park brake is not working... and yes it is Gearbox removal, strip, repair. find the broken bit/s of metal before assembly and re instal... an ideal opportunity to check all the internals.... like clutch bands, galleries, bearings, gears etc..can be very expensive...MB do an exchange Gearbox for GBP 3350 with 12 months warranty!!!???

Re: Park Cable Advice please

Cheers fixwin, as ever Stirling information!

called them and said to calculate the cost and if there is not much in it then go for thegear box exchange option, was surprised that one knew about it - so well done GWOA, some money saved! . It seems that some one had been putting it into park before the truck had actually stopped, and I think I know who the perp is, as she demonstrated it today in the hire car!

When was the rule concerning; wife, stick and beatings repealed? Still no answer on the SatNav and why ots not working....

Maybe a 320 oil burner will be on the cards, now....

Joe
Do you think this could have happened as a result of that rear end shunt a while back? Might be worth a talk to the insurers on that one.

Bad idea. No Getrag can withstand the humongous torque of the G500 engine! 8)

Thank you Mr Mortinson..... I did not want to comment as the honourable member from Wales would only gone on about how all things should be the same, yadah, yadah

To give you an update, well there really is not one to give! I did try calling Thursday and Friday, all I got back was they were still chasing a quote for a new reconditioned gear box.... and to think I only went in to see if they could fix the Sat Nav - God knows what would happen to a new AMG owner who wanted a bulb fixing!

MB UK had better be able to step up to the plate, otherwise methinks that it will be another wet start to the UK market!

Spider1V - No manual in MY 500 thanks!

Joe
Have you enquired at a gearbox repair company rather than just MB? There must be some good ones around. Having to exchange the box for one small part seems overkill to me.

Just a tip for when you get it back, use N and put on the handbrake. That's what I do unless on a slope. This also has the advantage of not having to push the brake pedal to move the selector, if your G is so equiped. Mine isn't.

Re: Park Cable Advice please

how do Audi and BuMW manage to use manual box's on their high performance cars then, I think its the Merc image of fat lazy businessman to blame for the lack of a manual rather than that they're not there.

Well, I don't know about the manual gearboxes in Porsches, BMWs or Audis... I just know that the manual Getrag gearbox fitted to Gs is not very robust.

I agree with Roly... there must be some autogearbox specialist out there capable to economically refurbish it.

Good question, glad you raised that subject as MB always faced that problems, fat lazy businessmen, third world dictators are more interested in running the business's and countries to be worried over a piffling thing such as changing the gears of a car. But Again the fat lazy businessmen and third world dictators also realised that the flashy 'up and coming' manager / country usurper would be quick and nimble in taking their job or country, so they complained to mercedes Benz, who then held a competition, to build an auto box that would match if not exceed a manual box, and lo and behold the AMG sports gear box was born. And when it cam to the market on a like for like basis it could out preform any BUmW or Audi as the SEC500 AMG auto box in 1978 was the fastest auto box in the world hurling the car from 0-6 in under 5.4 seconds. To match that you would have needed a BuMW Alpina to match that and they did not come around until about 1984.

And across the range 'tiptronic' function was available from 1996 and again in a 'manual' mode would beat a similar weight and sized engine car.

On a more serious note - ma G is ready to come back and they managed to fix the problem for me, and it did not involved stripping the box down! took about three hrs though, but fix he is! - So watch out the fat cat express will be on the roads again!

Re: Park Cable Advice please

Well, the old boy is back.... And we still have the SatNav problem - but will save that for another day!

The gear box if now fixed, and they did not have to do the 20 hours+ job. The whole park cable thing is quite common, and there is a 'shorter' potential solution that is a 3 hour job. Does not work all the time, however as they recommend that mine was a recent issue it make things easier to fix.

Have a list of things they removed and replaced, one of which was the electrohydraulic control unit for automatic transmission (?)

Windscreen motor - the last one bolt had sheared
New mirror glass - broken when speed of sound was attained! (Thanks Dentsmithy!)

The whole lot - inc parts and labour was £1,366. The boys at Brooklands were great - got 33% discount on the labour and 20% on parts.

Thanks to all for your help and advice - to tell the truth I was a bit concerned at the potential of a £3,000 + bill, but now seems not so bad. Gear box is VERY tight now - in fact maybe too tight? as its difficult to move from D down to 4, 3 and 2 - but one will let this run for a few miles to see if things loosen up... again advice please.

Many thanks all - Nice to be out of the B class and back in the G!
