Modifications Merc Approved to Suspension
I'm looking to improve the suspension to make it less 'floaty' and I was wondering if anyone had any idea's or who has done this successfully and if so, where they had it done. I've got a V8 diesel.
lwb or short? The lwb rides better than the swb whose ride I would characterise as more choppy. I don't think there is much you can do, g-wagens will never handle like sports cars, adapt your driving style :?:
18" wheels will reduce the roll too
I have air suspension in the rear of mine. Haven't driven it much since fitted cause i haven't it insured at the moment, but it'll give me the option of stiffening or levelling out the car.
any info on gear used for air suspension horse?
The air bags used inside the springs are originally for a landcruiser. My neighbour bought the kit for his own G a few years ago but never got around to fitting them. He has an air kit in one of his G's already but you have to adjust the pressure on the bags by air line. My kit has its own compressor and you adjust the pressure in the bags by a switch inside the car and it has a pressure gauge. Not sure of the make of the kit but i still have the boxes at home. I'll put up that info when i find them.
How can air springs stiffen a car? They have a very low spring rate.. so they are very soft. IMHO air springs make a soft ride but will increase the side to side roll rate . They seem to destroy ultimate road holding as they are so soft that you cannot tell where the axles are on bad road. Yes great for straight rough roads but don't ask them to deal with corners unless you want to fit (or if they exist then fit larger) anti roll bars. See how RR do it.. guess you are looking at G55 etc if you want MB parts to do similar.
They are air bags placed inside the steel coil spring. They are not a replacement for the coil springs. They are made by Firestone.
