Auxillary fuel tanks
Is it possible to 'cap off' the aux tanks i.e. prevent fuel going to them when one fills up or does the fuel pass through one or other of them on it's way to the main tank?
Hi Tom the fuel passes through the aux' tank in the the offside wheelwell behind the filler cap.it can be removed and a tapered hose then interfaces the filler neck to the main tank..the near side aux' tank can be removed and a suitable blanking cap put into or over the main fuel tank aperture...metal petrol tanks corrode on the top surface between the loadspace floor and the tank..only accessable when you remove the tank...if your petrol smell/leak is only when the tank is full it could be ...perished hoses...corroded tank...or leaking gasket around the fuel sender (accessable via a square panel under the loadspace carpet held in by four screws).....
I have had the steel pipes rust through before. Easy job, just replace with rubber.
Then you're in trouble.
Hi Tom the aux tank necks in the fuel tank corrode if the hose and jubilee clip are not fitted flush to the surrounding metal (to stop the salt from the road collecting in the gap) tightening the jubilee clip crushes the corroded metal and creates a bigger leak.try releasing the jubilee clips (top and bottom) and working the hose up off the neck in the tank***but only if you are sure that the leak is in that area*** if not leave well alone and look elsewhere....because if the necks are corroded the tank may prove to be "non repairable" check all the little hoses going to the fuel pump /filter breather and charcoal filter (located behind the offside side panel underneath the window in the load area) which incidently could be the reason for the smell.(decayed charcoal)......
Hi Tom just a thought is the engine slow to star after standing a few days??
Hi Tom not losing fuel pressure forward of the fllter then... so it points to the tanks as the area to look at....
Hello, is the "tapered pipe" an obtainable MB part ?...As in my rebuild on my 460,I am sorting the tanks out, the main tank is salvagable but the aux one is very poor and at £300 plus I ain`t buying a new one...The problem I forsaw with disgarding the aux tank and replaceing it,is that it would need to be a stiff pipe (ie metal or simular) as it obviously reatains the filler cap rigidly in place ? Gary
Hi if you remove the aux fuel tank there is a metal pipe a rubber hose and jubilee type clips required to replace it.both are available from MB..if you post your Email address I will copy you the relevant pages from the workshop manual...try Allan Jones 07779 431009 for secondhand parts...
Hello Fixwin 38, thanks for your reply...My email addy is gspringell@hotmail.com
Hello Peter, thanks for the page you sent...I am not sure if we are understanding each other totally,as I wanted to leave out the aux tank and conect from the filler cap directly to the main tank with apie of sorts ...Either rigid (to hold the cap firm in place) with short rubber connector or rubber obviously with a 90 degree bend on either.
Kind regards Gary
You need to get the standard bits from MB. The aux tank was an option and is likely to be only on the filler side. The standard config is a stright through pipe from the filler to the tank.
The filler neck is £156.
Hi if you look at the items upper left of the schematic you need items 80 53 59 77 and 71 either from a breaker or MB and a piece if petrol grade hose for the breather.......
Hello, thanks for your replies...So need to check out the price and availability of the pipe/bend...If they are too exspensive and I cannot cobble up an alternative to the MB parts, then maybe I will have another look repairing the Aux tank.

Thanks Peter. I thought I'd go through a process of illimination before removing the tank. It seems to me that the likely culpret is the hoses and/or their connection with the tank because these are under pressure when the aux tanks are full. The seal between them and the main tank is just a jubilee clip after all, from what I can see.
