463 FUEL TANK

Having discovered I only had one intact fuel strap I removed the tank which seemed to take ages.
Tried to remove the fuel strainer located in the bottom of the tank where the fuel pick up is, no chance just spins around? ( Despite using proper tool)
Car was running out of Diesel below a 1/3 of a tank , though would restart once fuel had drained through? Anything else I should check, whilst tank is out?
Also I know the sender is removable but that in turn sits in a big plastic dish ( big jam jar lid) Does that come out? If so how?

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Hi the sender is removed by rotating the assembly anti clockwise...the strainer could be turning with the flange.which is not good because it could now leak.....

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Could not see any part surrounding the strainer which looked separate.
Any idea of removing the top of the fuel tank ( the bit the sender goes on to?)

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Return line enters strainer from the side. If it's broken off, it matches your symptom.
My truck has the same "fuel running out before tank empty" problem. I removed the sender unit and saw through the opening the broken off from strainer return line.

At least the sender unit opening is too small and tank seems to be welded shut from the above. I haven't removed the underbody protector below the tank to see if strainer could be removed from below.

As I have not figured out if the strainer could be removed somehow, I made a temporary fix through the sender unit opening(a little like surgeon).
I extended the return line and did put the extension to the strainer. Strainer's upside is open, actually it looks like a jar. So I did put the extension to the jar. It's not the best fix because I couldn't close the hole on the side of the strainer, in the place where return line has broken off. Of course, strainer is leaky there and gasoline gets back to the tank.

If anybody can tell if it's possible to remove the strainer without cutting the tank?

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Having removed tank, and sender unit I can see the cover of the strainer, which resembles a big plastic flower pot ( upside down ), I notice that one of the return pipes goes to the bottom of the tank via an internal hose, though since this a return I don't see why it should matter where it goes.
If you peer through the tank protector you should see the fuel supply union( Iam assume that this is the supply) you shouls see the strainer with 4 holes in it. you have to buy the special Merc pin wrench to remove it, though mine just turns the whole strainer and flower pot cover, if I knew how to lock the flower pot up, I am sure I could remove the blocked strainer, but how!
Does yours still run out on a 1/4 tank?

According to EPC, you can remove strainer, the detail No 8.

Maybe it requires a harder pull after untightening.

Sorry, I confused two different things, I wasn't talking about the strainer but the plastic collector around the strainer.

I guess the collector's purpose is to give continues fuel supply even under maximum body tilt. One unsolved mystery for me is how the fuel gets into the collector in the first place. It would be extremely valuable if you could post some strategic photos of the tank from top and bottom.

After repair not, now yes. I guess the extended return line has fallen out from the collector. I couldn't fix it properly. Probably gasoline movement has shifted it.
It runs out before "tank empty" warning light comes on, it's safe to refuel somewhere around 1/4.
A manged few times to drive until warning light has come on but it stalls in turns.

Unfortunately really need a cross section of the tank, don't think a photo will do it justice, the dome thing is anti surge device, but not shown on the EPC. They must put dome in place before sealing up the tank as no way it can go in otherwise?

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Since I couldn't get strainer out, I drilled a large hole in the top of that dome, to help get fuel around the strainer, this in turn made the strainer visible and it looked pretty choked up with gunge, so I'm afraid bodged it a bit by punching a hole throughj the strainer, but it has meant I can get down to below a quarter of a tank rather than a 1/3. The detached pipe should fit on the side of the anti surge, but no way could I reattach it, ( that supplys the fuel return which then in theory goes through the strainer almost immediatly back in to the engine). I'm sure performane has improved a bit as well.
Ordered a new tank , though a bit miffed as it came without a new strainer even though epc says it should come with one!

I applaud your bravery with the old one...but curious about the new one, so what will you do? Take the strainer out of the old one and put it into the new one, or you have to order a new strainer?
I think it's £40-odd new but available on ebay in a couple of places for a bit less than that (not sure if petrol/diesel specific).

Re: 463 FUEL TANK

Hi, no way I can remove the old strainer in the old tank as I suspect the threaded insert is turning, no wish to wreck tank completely ( as mite be of use to a 460)
I am still waiting to hear if MB are going to give me a new strainer but I think their price is about £75, doubt they are specific, though unlikely a petrol would clog up.
Ideally I would have cut in to the old tank, but can't find anyone good to try plastic welding!

Well here's the one I could find, if useful:

I also think I have the rubber seal somewhere, bought it before realising I couldn't get the thing off.
