Have a 230 ge 460. 5 speed box. the lever is very slack in 1st and second and getting worse. Have been to a couple of trasmisssion specialists who all complement the build of the g box but suck hard through there teeth when asked to sort it out. Hard to get parts for these and expensive........ and all that.

Can anyone help, most believe its a selector problem but i would be keen to replace the lever a s some joker before me shortened it, for quick gear changing!!!!!

Most probably he/she wasn't a joker 'cause there were two lenghts offered my Mercedes of the gearchange lever!

Anyway, you problem might be very easy to solve. Just crawl underneath you car and look for the bushes of the linake between the lever and the gearbox... they must be destroyed after so many years of service exposed to the elements! They are very easy to replace and they cost virtually nothing!

Once at it, why don't you remove the gearlever gaiter and soak the base of it with spray grease? If I was right in the previous paragraph you'll certainly notice the difference!

Cheers

thanks for your reply i will get under the g whe it stops raining!!!!!!
I think the lever was shortened though as it has a very untidy weld towards the base, it is so short that it only sticks up about 3 inches. Where can i pick up bushes?
