Doing a front wheel bearing/kingpin/seal service and I’ve got this far. I’m a little stuck though. I need a new CV gaiter so I have to pull the half shaft out. It’s at the position shown and it won’t come out or go back in!?

Am I missing something? Any hints greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ

No problem Roly, no play or noise before I took it apart.

The picture was taken after I had removed maybe 500ml+ of fresh grease. I check the hubs regularly so they are always more than half full.

Ground to a halt though, good old MB have supplied the wrong bearing (as expected really) so it’s off to Bearing Man 1st thing Monday.

Oh and haven’t got round to trying the socket yet Roly. Someone else had been in there before (yet another bodger) and mangled both slotted nuts so I just used a punch to remove them (I’ve got new ones)

Hi Russ the CV gaiter should be packed with grease independently of the housing ...see "needamerc" this forum who has performed the same task recently.and posted it .....

Hi Peter, what I meant is that although the CV gator was split the CV joint had not been starved of grease.

Russ, how much on the clock you have? Why do you have to replace bearings?

230k Miles.

Wheel bearings were fine, no play but the top kingpin was worn (water ingress). While I'm in there I'm replacing everything though.
