Was going up the A380 out of Exeter a couple of days ago - long uphill stretch - struggling to maintain momentum in 4th so I dropped it into 3rd - revs go up as it slips like mad. Oh dear. Took it easy from that point onwards - but no avoiding the hills between there and Brixham. Felt like it's slipping in gear. I fully expect a horrible brown colour when I pluck up the courage to dip the fluid before going home on Friday. Assuming that a fluid and filter change doesn't do the job, what ought I to budget for a gearbox rebuild? Anyone recommended around the Reading area?

Hi old fluids break down with heat if you have not changed ALL the fluids after ten years + standing in a barn you can expect trouble from the coolant. oil. petrol. and brake fluids...overheating. loss of vicosity...moisture causing brake fade...dirty petrol filters..heavy power steering...... the G' box should come to life again with a complete drain a filter and fresh ATF.. slipping probably caused by selecting a lower gear opening a port that would not normally be opened...poor pulling power could be choked fuel filter from sediment created by dried up petrol.....I have a 49.000 miles from new 463 which has been barn stored since 1998 requiring All the hydraulic components replaced due to ingress of moisture in the hydraulic oil..... GBP 2800 for parts before the labour....

Hi reflecting on your gearbox problem.there is no need to change gear with the lever from 4 to 3 because the "kickdown" switch under the accelerator pedal should change the gear when the pedal is "floored"...check fuse F10 or F11 if kickdown not working.......

As it happens the ATF was lovely and clear, no bits, no burnt smell - nonethelss it's in for a change next week.

At risk of opening up a 'what oil' argument......what ATF is best for this box? The manual says Dexron B which I reckon became obsolete years ago? Dexron II ok or is there a better option?

Hi Dexron ll or red ATF will suit but could become contaminated if you do not drain the torque converter and change the filter..DO NOT overfill as the front seal is prone to failure if exposed to excess pressure....

I know - it's all being changed including the torque convertor and filter. I was wondering if Dexron III offers any advantage with better stability at high temperatures than Dexron II

Re: 280 GE auto box

Dexron lll may be overkill for these old G boxes...bit like using synthetic engine oils on 35 year old technology.....
