Cold start rumbling 300GD 463
Hello All.
When my G-Wagen is started from cold it will rumble for a minute like its choking or not getting enough fuel/air and after that it settles down to normal. When you start it from warm its fine. Is there some sort of system the engine uses when its started from cold to supply it with slighty more fuel for that initial time?? Any ideas? Thanks.
Adrian.
Sounds like it might be one, or more, faulty heater plugs. They don't last forever, unfortunately. I have one in my beast that is a bit sluggish, but the engine always picks up a smooth rythym within a few seconds....well 10 - 15 seconds anyway, so I don't worry about it too much.

Attend to the duff heater plug as the cylinder in question may suffer in the long run. It also puts unnecessary stress on your engine and mounts etc. After all it's an easy job to identify and replace it.
When a heater plug failed on mine, the glow plug light on the dash fails to light so you know one of them has gone and then illuminates upon start up and expires shortly after.
A fuel filter change can help
That is strange. Since I bought my 463, I have the following symptoms. When I start the truck with cold engine in very cold weather it starts perfectly fine and I drive it normally for about 600 yards until I get to a crossroads where I have to stop to let traffic pass. Then the idle would be very unstable for a little while and the engine would feel rough when driving on for a couple of miles. But even if I stop then the idle would be normal afterwards. On warming up the engine it would purr as a kitten.
I have changed the glowplugs, the injectors, the pre-filter and the filter and only after chaging the ELR I have noticed some improvement but it still is not perfect.

Did you get the email I sent you about 2 days ago?
dont forget air can get into the diesel system via the return pipes, which can become porous when older.if you squeeze them and get wet diesely fingers that may be the issue.replacement pipes cost pennies and its an easy check.

You could always try a very strond dose of Forte injector cleaner,(avaliable from most garages£12ish) not had the need to try it on mine but made a Peugeot engine go really well, also a scetipal about firms that recon injectors, if you've a good trustworthy place fine, not sure they all are!
Thanks for letting us know the answer. Glad it's ok now
Thanks guys, I will check this out.
Adrian.
