Hi everyone,
We all know the reliability and longevity of the OM 617's and 602's are legendary, but how is the situation with the OM603 3-litre (not the 3.5  ) as fitted to the W463 G300? Has anyone had any bad or particularly good experiences? Thinking of upgrading to W463...

I have 180,ooo miles on mine. It's been regularly serviced each 5000 odd miles. It doesn't have a very easy life in a g , I regularly take mine to 4000 rpm often more. The previous owner used the G to tow horses.
That said, I can still do 100 mph and it uses less than 1L of oil/ 4-5000 M. No oil leaks . I've put in new hydraulic elements on the valves and a new timing chain. I put in a turbo thermostat to run it at 10* cooler as it used to run close to 100 * always but I think that's where it is meant to run.
I have read plenty of people who have 200,000 + miles on 124 series w/out trouble.

I reckon they are great. Maintenance is so easy as there's plenty of room too. Oh and 23 MPG

I can't agree with Roly more. I was one of the three people humiliated while being driven in a G290 GD Turbo only to be overtaken by Roly's GWagen @ close to an indicated 100 mph and including Peter Perfect doing a full moon to us from the back seat. I know this is illegal but we were in French soil, coming back from the 25th anniversary celebrations in Stuttgart so don't try to report us to da Police....

I have a 463 300 GD as well and I had a 460 300 GD before this one so I would say that I am prepared to compare both. I love the OM603. I mean, other than the poor acceleration, I still can't believe that it is a diesel. It sounds lovely, has no vibrations whatsoever, it's gutsy and loves high revs. It is a lot more usable in the low revs than the OM 617 that I had before, but this could be because the gearing of my truck is shorter than the previous one.

Mine uses no oil at all, but it's only got 103,000 miles. And I get 20 mpg doing basically city and local lanes.

I just love it 8)

603 Engine

I like mine, plenty of power all around the rev range, uses hardly any oil, average 23mpg, even managed close to 28 on a steady run, but mat be my maths arn't correct!I Also the emmissions at the MOT are very green, sails through the test.I change the Oil and filter every 4k and it seems to prefer a nice basic diesel oil.

When I said that I was referring to the 100 mph but that would be illegal in the UK as well....
