I recently purchased a pair of stainless steel side steps for my 1989 LWB....
I've seen the same ones on other G's in the club Mag, so must be origonal.

Q. What is the correct method of fixing them?

The brackets that came with them ( 3 brackets per step) show that holes have to be drilled into the wedge shaped box frames which are attached to the floor pans.
My thinking is ....they should be attached to the main box section chassis.
Please Advise!

Your thinking would be correct if the side steps had been designed as a means of protecting the underside of the G but they're not. They are there to aid grandma or the kids get into the truck and for that purpose the attachment you describe is sufficient.

I believe that you are correct then, but if anyone knows better, I'll eat my hat.

If the first method is sufficient, is it advisable to use small steel tubes between the nut and bolt to prevent the body squashing together or is the box section strong enough?

I don't think you need to bother with the crush tubes. If you're worried, you could always use a shoulder bolt.
