Guys,

The Haflinger 4wd Club of Great Britain ( http://www.ccc.nottingham.ac.uk/~ppzcad/haf.html ) is organising an off-road day at the Brick Kiln Farm, near Alton, Hampshire on Sunday 1 May, and they have invited us, the GWOA, to come along and share the day with them.

I am told that this is the first treffen organised by their club in the South so this is your unmissable opportunity to see more than 20 Haflingers in the flesh together in the same place.

Pinzgauer.UK ( http://www.pinzgauer.uk.com/Intro.htm ) has also been invited (although unconfirmed) so there's the chance of seeing a Pinzgauer as well.

There will be a £ 25 fee per car to use the off-road site, which will be open from 9:00 AM. Given that the Hafilnger club needs assistance with paying the rental of the site for the day, anyone is invited as long as they turn up in a truck made by Steyr-Puch, i.e. a Haflinger, Pinzgauer or a G-Wagen (no need to be a GWOA member then).

Questions? Paul Niblett is the organiser and his number is 01252 812087. Here: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=469000&Y=137000&s... you will find a map of the place. And in here, you will find the aerial picture: http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=469000&Y=137000&sc... . The site is between Chawton Park wood and the A3, right after the tunnel that comes underneath the Watercress railway line.

I am definitely there at 10 AM. Any other takers? Please confirm your assistance here. The more, the merrier.

Cheers

Sorry! I forgot the Noriker! You may also turn up in a Noriker, if you can borrow one of the three in existence in the world!

I should be able to make that, its not far from me. I have never off roaded before & i'm not totally sure that my G is up to it yet as it makes clicking sounds when steering in 4WD. Will i get odd looks if i just turn up to chat with people & have a look round?
I will happily off road it if anybody thinks it will be OK & will happily be guided by the experts :)

S B Varney,

But of course you can come. And there will be somebody there to instruct you on how to use your G off-road. I look forward to see you there!

I am at a big 4x4 show in Warwicksire on Saturday, Gaydon. but I will come down to Alton on Sunday for a ride out.
I can't thiink why any one would want to come on a horse J but you never know, and I think there may be more than 3 in existance they are bred quite profusely in the Gauer region of Austria.

Absolutely Bill and that is only because these guys at Steyr had the vice of naming their off-road vehicles after Austrian horses, like the Noriker, the Haflinger, the Pinzgauer and the G-Wagen, which will end up in history like the only horse named after a car! (or else what forbids you of naming your horse the way you want it?)

The final countdown is on and I hope that a few GWagens will turn up for the day so that we do not let the Haflingers and Pizgauers feel lonely.

I shall be around at about 10 AM. See you there!

Cheers

Welcome SBVarney and I really hope that you will join the GWOA and come to our next do's!

I do apologize if I wasn't too talkative but I was concerned about the recent wounds that I had just inflicted on my poor G!

We had a heck of a day. 10 Haflingers, 8 G-Wagens and 1 Pinzgauer gathered at the site which was fantastic and did cater for all levels of off-road driving proficiency.

Thanks to Peter Perfect, Mark, Quercus, Bill Moss, SB Varney, John Fish and the unknown driver of the eight G whom we did not meet!.

Pictures to follow!

A bit of a summary of the day:

The site was fantastic, running alongside the railway line, which is not connected to the public network and only used for some fanatics to run their perfectly restored steam engines.

Within the site there is a track for races on grass and at the end of it a small forest, full of tracks which bear the wounds inflicted by many a Land-Rover.

The soil, as usual around here, very treacherous, a mix of clay with layers of chalk peppered with genuine lumps of flint, sharp as knives.

The attendance, very selective. There were a total of 10 Haflingers, 8 G-Wagens and a lonely Pinzgauer. It was incredible. A member of the Haflinger Club told me that some 1.200 Haflingers were imported into the UK, of which he reckons that some 120 might be inexistence and potentially in working condition. The Club has some 90 members but, to gather more than 10 Hafs is no mean feat, given that their top speeed on the road is between 52 and 64 Km/h (33 and 40 mph) depending on whether they are fitted with the 22 or 27 HP engine and the short- or long gearing. I mean, travelling in modern traffic the distances that you might find in a country like the UK at those speeds is out of the question so it's more a question of towing your Haf (or transporting it inside a Renault van as one of the members did).

The attending Pinzgauer is a 1989 model, fitted with the 6 cylinder, 2.4 litre Turbodiesel engine of VW origin. It is owned by Pinzgauer UK ( http://www.pinzgauer.uk.com/Intro.htm ) current holder of the manufacturing rights of the Pinzgauer on a global basis. I was told by the engineer who brought the truck that this unit in particular carries a lot of sentimental value for the company, because it was the first Pingauer imported by the company when they were still made in Austria. Despite being about the same lenght as a LWB G-Wagen, it has twelve seats. Also it looked to me that a bunch of parts of the car came from the G-Wagen parts bin.

What a great day we had!
