I know we had had this discussion before but I have forgotten where we actually buy the replacement spring turrets, my nearside rear has been welded and is holding up but its only a matter of time really b4 it gives especially if I go off road. Are Mercedes the best source?

Re: Replacement lower rear spring turrets

Hi

I guess you don't have Forum search without being a GWOA Member?  There are many threads about rust on these mounts and advice to fix.  Here are some.  With the direct link, you should be able to see it.

Some part numbers (seems like MB are not so expensive for these ones):

Console (support for rear spring): A 460 320 20 78

SHOCK MOUNT Part #460-320-16-78
SHOCK MOUNT Part #460-320-17-78
CHANGE-OVER VAL Part #000-800-04-78
BRANCH-OFF FITTING Part #117-078-01-45

Dealers,  easiest way, by lower do you mean the dinner plates that sit on the axle?£10?

Or the turrets on the chassis?  About £100 each

I mean the shock absorber holder, the dinner plates are fine

Ah, I didn't respond earlier because I thought you said Spring mounts.

I recently had my rear upper shock absorber mounts replaced.

Got them from MB main dealer @ £46.04 plus VAT each (they kindly gave me a small discount for asking nicely).

Really nice solid bits of kit - for that price not really worth looking around for something that might not be as good quality.

My fault I should have double checked on the car, the spring mounts are ok, problem is the holder for the upper part of the shock absorber, its been welded up but not sure how long it will last

Re: Replacement lower rear spring turrets

Not that eay to see when the holder is in place but it's very easy for mud/water to get behind one plate and it rusts/rots from the inside. Mind you, I think mine were the originals so 28 years is not bad going.

Unless it's a vehicle you can't do without it probably makes sense to wait until it goes again and then have new mount welded in. When I ordered they were available from Milton Keynes so only took 2 days to get at my local MB parts department. If one side's gone then definitely worth doing both sides at the same time as the other won't be far behind.

I have the part on order via Mercedes in Coldstream, Scottish Borders, strange I know given I live in South Wales but I've always ordered stuff through them as they are one of the few that understand the G

The shock mounts are available top and bottom,  as are the spring turrets, most people have to lift the body to get a welding torch in there, tho this is not as difficult as it sounds.

Shock mounts , easy , unfortunately one of mine snapped off, but ride still  ok when one broken.

Re: Replacement lower rear spring turrets

I've ordered an upper one, it hasn't snapped off but it did split so welded up twice, lower one is ok but the shocker itself is badly corroded so will swap them as a pair.

I'm on a bit of a roll, new gear knob and replacement bumper on its way too as mine has a small bit of damage, I'll offer it up if anyone wants one when it comes off
