So, why a "G"?

Horrible question, but I guess I need to start somewhere. I've always tended to admire them from a distance....but never "needed" one. Well, now I reckon I might. My partner is sorely in need of something to tow her horsebox (and yes, there's a horse too!) around from event to event. Something that doesn't need to be used every day. My life has seen me nearly always default to German cars (but never BMW...always Audi VW and Merc for some reason). I've thought about Shoguns et al, but they seem so "fake" in some respects.... something keeps hauling me back to Gs. Don't know a damn thing about them, but have never been scared to get stuck in, but having just turned 50, that urge might begin to wane soon!. So, is there a million reasons why I should forget the rest and buy a middle aged (or ancient) G? I even bid for one (on impulse.....gulp) on EBay today, but just missed out. Can some of you guys and gals help out a G virgin here? Don't want to spend a fortune...4 or 5k is plenty plent plenty for me! Am I doing the right thing?

I think you need to decide do you really want a G. For that sort of money you could pick up a pretty good Japanese truck that would probably be an easier ownership proposition or a Defender (easy to break but easy/cheap to fix).

If however you want something with real depth in the way it’s engineered and a little unusual then yes go for a G. Be prepared for garages to look blank when you turn up in one or to even refuse to look at it, parts suppliers to deny they exist etc. In reality there is nothing too out of the ordinary with them though.
Buying tips, problem areas etc. are on this forum.
