Will I find a RHD GD300 (OM617 motor) with AC?
Hello GWOA,
I'm new on this forum but a regular on others. I'm looking for a Wagen with the OM617 engine (yes, I know they're slow). My only requirements are:
1) Well maintained
2) RHD
3) Factory AC
I've learnt that the older G's were far more agricultural in nature and harder to find with AC. I was hoping to get a reality check from you and some leads, if any.
Many thanks!
hi and welcome
the factory AC will be like looking for hens teeth in the UK

There were very few W463 that came with factory air-con in the UK and this is the the 'luxury' model that came after the W460, which you are looking for. Perhaps if you find a late 1998 -1989 model you may have more chance, but I don't think that the W460 was designed with the possibility of aircon in mind (the W460 dash has no knob space for the A/C). I have seen essentially aftermarket kits from Diavia and others. If you retrofit, you will also require some vacuum valves to raise engine idle-speed when the a/c is on. I think you may have more luck in finding a 300GD in a W463 guise with the OM603 engine, which has most of the ruggedness and simplicity of the 617, but with a little more refinement (6-cyl) and power.
the factory fitted AC a W460 300GD was behr
I had an after market a/c kit in a ge280, Davida or something like that
Yes, but I don't think that is a factory AC. I guess you are looking for AC for use in some hot, RHD, country?
Otherwise, I would concentrate first on body condition, then an OM617 and, personally, an automatic, as I think that diesel-auto combination works really well, having had one. If you find all that, you'll be really lucky. Whether it has AC would or not, would not be a spoiler for me. But I'm in the UK, where AC is somewhat irrelevant.
You could go for this type of AC;
Good luck. Seems like a sensible combination of economy(!) and performance.
I get confused with diesels and engine numbers... what variants of GD300s are there? I have a E350 which is a lovely V6 diesel, and before that an E320 which was bullet proof, also V6. So what is in the GD300? Straight 6 I guess. And what performance/economy do they really get. In case I go this route.
My 2 G's have been 230GEs. Once a 5 speed manual which drove beautifully like a car on spongy suspension. The current one a 4 speed auto which replaces that spark with comfort instead.
I want a V6 or V8 sometime.
I think a front sun visor is an excellent way of cutting down glare and heat transmission, after all the frony window is the only one that is non vertical. Only one I can find is for a Landy but should be adaptable.
Sorry, I don't know all the engine categories but, is this any good?

For the UK, there were originally only two 300GD types:
in W460 guise, there was the normally aspirated, OM617, 5-cylinder engine,
in W463 guise, there was the normally aspirated, OM603, 6-cylinder engine.
In mainland Eurrope, there were turbo versions of both.
For the W460, there was also a 4-cylinder, OM616, version, the 240GD; and an OM602, 5-cyl, 250GD for the W463 which then became a 2.9L in the W461, with and without turbo.
After year 2,000, other CDI versions appeared:such as the G270, with OM612; and then the V6, G300, with OM642; and more recently, the Bluetecc version as a G350, but with the same 3.0L, V6, OM642.
V8 = OM628
Brilliant thanks.
I like 6 cylinder Diesels and think they have plenty of power for a big G, but needs to be the Turbo. They sound fine too.
Slightly off engines - saw this nice review of the G evolution.
I have a 617a engine with an AC pump
I also have a A C dash unit available
.
Much appreciated! Are there any on these forums with the OM617 + Factory AC? I was planning on offering a finders fee but If not, I'm probably never going to find one.
I own a W123 300D with factory AC & self leveling suspension. I was told those were rare in the UK as well. I guess I got lucky one and hoping for another streak.
