foneman , What engine is your 5 speed mated to and is it the standard Getrag unit. What is wrong with your box , does it rattle when warm , ie ..as just about every getrag mated onto the 617 diesel ? . Cant help with stripping of box but I know a man than can do the job for you , he willl be checking out my "military " ( OK van ) gearbox soon. Cheers Allan
if its the getrag box onto the diesel it will probably make rattling noises soon after a rebuild , they are notorious for it , when I changed Big Blues engine to diesel from the straight six I went from a perfectly quite getrag to a rattly at idle one within 1/2 day, some will run for ages like this , better to get the old Merc four speed unit. the sticking going in and out of gears is probaly down to the linkage , had similar problem with mine sticking in 3rd when offroad , rectified when I took a little time to set up linkage up properly . Cheers Allan .
An interesting article has just come up on the USA forum about modifying the bearings in the getrag box, it is some-thing I advocated over a year ago when I built the box for the tdi 300 GD.
Ah well better late than never.
Where abouts is this USA forum?

you might have to sign in though which will take you through the main site
Interesting about the Gertrag 5-speed's rattle:
One of my G's(300GDS with this gearbox) had same rattle at idle and needed a new clutch as well.
So got new Sachs kit and fitted. Totally unexpected RATTLE GONE!
Old release bearing was past it's best, so think that was the culprit.
BTW, Sachs kit was £113 incl vat over the counter at local motor factor, so shop around.
Agree with Allan, sticking gears most likely binding linkage, often on other/older Mercs caused by worn bushes.
:? IS THERE ANY HELP OUT THERE ????????? please
what i need is a phone number that my mechanic can ring whilst he is at the box
