Fitting a winch is a very crucial part of off roading, it is however important to avoid creating more problems than you are solving.
I have attached a picture of a 80s NATO G fitted with what was considered at the time the bees knees in winch and winch bumper kit.
Having just removed this from the vehicle that I am restoring for a museum I can tell you that it weighs in excess of 200 kg projected 18" forward of the normal front line of the vehicle it is excerting enourmous weight and stresses to the front suspension wich is completley unmodified.
and on standard 16"x5j rims and tyres.
Add to that a sump gaurd made of 1/4 " sheet steel another 50kg and you have a vehicle that is just itching to dig it's nose in and get stuck.
It is attached using the original bumper fixing points and bolts, any serious winching would probably tear it off.
Some one should have told them about mercs winch bumper and detachable electric winch.

Re: Winches

talk about a car with history! i hope they're paying you for the restoration, but all the same, it must be somewhat of a pleasure

Here is a good camparison of different winch fitting styles on NATO Gs.

G 1 & 2 USA. winch set high and well back, increased ground clearance, and minimal added weight, good choice of winch and Tony Baskills favourite.

G 3 & 4 UK. 1/4 ton of winch and bumper hanging out 18". standard wheels springs and shocks. not only looks wrong , but adds to the Gs ability to get stuck

G 5. hard to identify but from the tatty paint it looks UK to me.
