Autobox won't physically select first gear
Hi,
my auto selector will not go into position 1 ?? Does anyone else have experience of this?? Any thoughts on how to fix - I have not messed with linkage or anything?
Gearbox works well otherwise.

Mine is the same. I believe I may have the answer, which is rather difficult to explain in words but I will give it a go.
If you get under the G and look up at the linkage on the passenger side you will see a white nylon sleeve which is part of the actual linkage. This has a spring insert which corrodes and seizes. In order to select 1st this spring extends the length of the linkage. If seized that = no extension in to 1st.
Bill Moss demonstrated this on a removed gearbox and it did seem to be the route of my problem. Why does it operate like this? Who knows!
Liberally spray with WD40 or equiv. And see what happens.
By the way mine is not sorted despite trying the above so any further help gratefully received!

Also remember that according to owners manual, vehicle will generally drive off in 2nd, unless under severe load. Test by driving off and then before it changes up, hold your foot on the accelerator but also apply footbrake. You should feel it change down into 1st just as you think its going to stall.

if you look inside the car into the selector by the "1" you will see a micro switch with a small roller on the end, this is the first gear select switch the gearbox automatic operations only work with 2,3+4 ratios.
this first gear is very low and wow does it shift the G up some steep inclines with ease.
Steve
Iagree with Russ, If you have somebody press the micro switch while you are underneath, you should hear the solenoid activate in the gearbox.

This is interesting - is reverse around the same ratio as first?
The reason I ask is that mine seems to take off with quite a lurch in reverse gear (seems much lower than 2nd gear - assuming first not selected by microswitch operation)?
No:
1st gear 4,007
2nd gear 2,392
3rd gear 1,436
4th gear 1
reverse 5,495
Thanks,
will give it a go..... and get back to you.
