Does anyone know the correct part no. for a steering damper for a 1992 300GES?
I've just returned from the local mercedes parts dept. and they said it could be one of two, either A0004636032 or A0004636632. They were also talking about measuring the diameter and length of the damper fitted at the moment.

Fitted at the moment is a Stabilus but the part no. has worn off.
I've looked through previous topics but none of the part nos. correspond with the ones that mercedes quoted.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Re: Steering damper part No.

I have some info to add.
The Gs (463) were fitted with both the above dampers depending upon whether they had wide alloys or standard 16 steels fitted.
The standard 16 wheels used the xxx60 32 which is also called the thin damper. Its diameter is say 30mm.

The Gs fitted with wide 15 alloys had the xxx66 32 damper. This is called the fat and is about 45mm. Mine has the wide 15 alloys so has the fat one.
Initially I fitted the thin one to my G and the steering wheel became quite light to turn. However, the vibration I had at 60 remained sometimes. So I bought the fat one (almost 2x cost) and the steering became heavier but no vibration at all. In 2003 it cost£100excl.

Subsequently I have learnt that MB have another damper for Gs which is pn 463 463 00 32 . I don't know what the spec / differences are between that one and the others, but they said it was the new part. It cost almost 150 as I recall . I didn't investigate it anymore.

If you are happy to try the thin damper I have the one I bought and only put 2 months use on it before replacing it. See what MB want and let me know.
Stabilus is the OE part

Thanks for your advice.

I've ordered a 'fat one' at about £150 and hopefully it will be fine.

Thanks again.

Re: Steering damper part No.

Roly,

I run the EPC after reading your message. First, using no filters other than the model (463.327) which is a SWB G300D like mine. It gave me the part number of what you refer as the "thin" damper (Part No A0004636032), but then it said that this part had been superseeded by the "fat" one (Part No. A0004636632). Funnily, when I go to my 2004 price list, it shows prices for both parts (€ 72.20 and € 117 respectively). Incidentally, part No A4634630032 (the latest version) does not appear in the EPC but is the price list is is quoted as costing € 143.40 (all prices excluding VAT).

Re: Steering damper part No.

I forgot to say that funnly enough when I run the EPC with the complete VIN of my G -which is a narrow axle G300D SWB manual- I get exactly the same results as for any 460.327, which leads me to think that, although it might have been fitted with the thin damper, it is recommended to replace this with the fat one.

Incidentally a previous owner had the fat one fitted to my G.

Cheers

Re: Steering damper part No.

I got my new damper today!

It's the big one (listed on the EPC as belonging to the G400CDI), ref A4634630032.

I had to use a bigger bolt on the side of the diff, given the bigger size of the damper.

Re: Steering damper part No.

When you say that it is used on the G400 do you mean that it is different from the one used on the G500?

I always understood there to be two dampers, the old thin one originally used on 460s and the new fat one used on 463s. Is this a third? If so where can I get one?

Can you help me out with where I get the Scorpion or TBR one, which is the best and how much. Why do you say the MB one is not man enough? What is the problem with it?

actually the 460 damper is the one thats puny!we got the 463 dampers off TBR as they only deal with that model,i guess its what their german contact sells(www.offroad24.com).
TBR uk contact number is;0800 16 999 47.
But you can also contact jeff at g classcenter.

As reported in previous posts,

A0004636032 is the damper for the W463 "narrow axle"
A0004636632 is the damper for the W463 with 7x15 and 7.5x16 alloys

and A 4634630032 is the damper fitted to the G500 and G400CDI as standard

I drove my G today and it is a totally different animal! It feels tight as a drum and as composed as driving a tank on the high street. When I removed theolder damper, I could compress and extend it without noticeable effort, which implies that it was dead. Now I have a new G.

Jesus
So how does the 463463... compare to the old fat one? Presumably the photos you posted were comparing it to the thin one.
That is the first pic I have seen of it.
Can you measure it and I will compare.
How much?

Ciao

I thought his posts were the original fat one to the new fat one.

Do you know when the new fat one became standard fit on G400 and 500?

Re: Steering damper part No.

I have measured the old and the new damper. The old is some 40mm wide (at the thicker section) and the new one is roughly 60mm (bear in mind that I don't have a caliber, just a ruler! so this is only approximate). I am inclined to think that my G had already the medium damper fitted (though it was completely useless)

The thickest of them was always standard for the G400CDI and I believe became standard for the G500 when the 400 was launched.

Cheers

Hi Jesus,

Rang a new MB dealer and he was highly indignant that I should have access to an EPC. Gave him the part number A4634630032 he quoted me 215.00 euro + Vat and a two week wait.

Is there a better deal out there?

Mike

Re: Steering damper part No.

Mike, this guy is ridiculous! I regularly get parts flown in from germany via my local main dealer - takes 3 to 5 days. My advice is to try a different dealer or if you haven't got one, I'll be at mine sometime next week and can ask. Then I can post it to you at cost.
Another option is to go for Bilstein or Sachs as I am sure one of them two makes these for Mercedes anyway...Jesus is there not a Sachs/Bilstein number on your damper? If there is, can we add it to the members only parts compatibility section of the forum?

Re: Steering damper part No.

Its part of the problem with the Celtic tiger at the moment. Just buy it, shut up and go away, next please.
Merceedes Benz in Irl is a seperate entity (concesionry/ affiliate)to MB UK and to the best of my knowlegde is not owned by MB Germany. Basically it seems that they can do what they like.
The Dealer I went to was Frank Hogan Motors Limerick a MB dealer for as long as I can remember, thinking that they would be more ameanable to older models.

If I was to call a UK dealer to buy the part they will not cut across another agency and post it out of the juristication. It even happens on Ebay with some online stores.

Mike

Re: Steering damper part No.

Huss, you know mercedes colindale is exactly who I spoke of in my post - good people there!
When I started off with G's a few years ago, Malcolm there raised his eyebrows, but nowadays is ever so happy to deal with G's. Very helpful and knowledgeable - was even willing and able to help me on occasion without a VIN/Chassis number. Worth his weight in gold.
Dealt with a few of the other chaps there as well, who were not always that cooperative but soon learnt when I said "well if you cannot help me, you'd better put Malcolm on the phone because he always can and does..."

Yes, Malcolm's a good bloke, but the rest of the blokes on the parts side are usually very helpfull as well.
It's the service side of main dealer MB that is a complete over the top corporate nonsense, prefer the old days when they were at Borehamwood

I think that is quite expensive. Preice should be around € 150 + VAT:

Somebody mentioned to me that he was happy to give 10% discount to all parts order for shipment.

I just replaced the "Fat" one (A.000.463.66.32) on my 2000 G500 with the updated A.463.463.00.32 version. Side by side they are identical, although the updated version feels like it weighs in slightly more.

There's a franchised MBUSA dealer selling them for US$162.00 plus shipping; although he will not ship out of the USA.

I bought mine off a German guy who appeared to have number for sale on Ebay. Unfortunately, shortly after I ordered mine he doesn't appear to have any more:

As you can see, I paid € 60 + pp. Can that be beaten?

We'll have to see what I can find. Cant say anything at the moment. So far just made initial contact with the MB supplier to establish a relation and to try and secure a continuous supply and proper after-sales service.

Well, at the very least your action is commendable given that most MB suppliers wouldn't even get on the phone when approached for establishing a business relationship.

Good luck with that.

If you get a quote from them make sure everything is written down.
Because if you only get a verbal quote you will definitely be overcharged.
But if you have it written down you can get your money back. It happened to me more than once and I stopped using them.I was charged £50+ /hour to fit side steps which were overcharged anyway. I ended up
taking them to the Trading Standarts Agency. They lost a very good customer in the end .
