Does anyone know if my '89 280 GEL has a starter inhibitor? I have the engine & box back in, when the car came to me the autobox was in neutral, as i've been busy i have had issues with the gear lever, getting it in & out of park, the car had a dead battery until today, now i have a new batt on and i'm having issues getting it in & out of park, also no starter motor action when i turn the key, which would lead me to believe an inhibitor's involved.......
I'm wondering if there's some sort of solenoid/inhibitor which has become kind-of out of sync with the lever/mechanism/gearbox upon reinstallation etc. I'm really flummoxed, as i can't remember whether we moved the gear lever when we took the engine & box out, etc etc, have re-connected the lever but something just is not right.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions, even if its that i appear a complete amateur!!!

Re: Starting inhibitor?

Yes there is an electrical inhibitor. It’s a circular type arrangement on the side of the gearbox, it appears to be part on the shift lever mechanism.
It does not however block the movement of the lever if that is what you are referring to. It is merely an electrical switch in series with the ignition switch and the starter solenoid.
If you want to prove the starter its possible to “hot wire” it. Just run a live direct to the red wire on the solenoid.

It could also be that the inhibitor switch is broken inside but appears ok mechanically. I had a 280E and the inhibitor switch would only last 2 months or so then break, it also took out the reversing lights which was annoying to other road users. And you could start it in drive/ reverse which was annoying the driver
I found the plug and shorted out the inhibitor switch

Re: Starting inhibitor?

Thanks for all help guys, now sorted. the actuating lever was put on the wrong way round so the inhibitor plastic lever thingy wasnt locating in the gear actuating lever, a case of look at it with fresh eyes, its so damned obvious........., and because

Now, question two (of many, thanks all!).

The gearbox has 3 leads going to it, the large multiplug one, a smaller single plug one, and a lead with a v small circular bolt-through type terminal on the end, covered by a rubber gaiter. I just cannot find, nor remember, where on earth this bolts onto, and I really dont want to remove the engine & 'box to find out. I've looked on the earlier car, and would have to drop the whole exhaust to get visual access which i could really do without having to do right now, I cannot have two cars off the road (the exhausts bound to need repairing if i drop it isnt it).
Can anyone remember where this wire runs to if they've had a gearbox out recently??

Once again, many many thanks guys
